Custom Trim Ideas For Wallpapering Your Home

by Bruce Burke

Wallpaper provides a host of options for creating a custom look in your home. There are many different styles to choose from, but there are also many ways to accent the wall paper with custom trim. If you are looking to give your home a new look, here are a few options to consider when choosing wallpaper and trim.

Framed Focal Wallpaper

If you love the idea of a patterned wallpaper but don't want to overwhelm the room, consider framing wallpaper to create a focal point in the room. Paint the walls a solid color, and choose the dimensions for your framed focal point. You can choose several large rectangles to run along the length of the wall, or you can wallpaper most of the wall, leaving just a border of paint around it. Use molding strips cut to fit around the wallpaper to create the framed look. You can also get creative with this idea by choosing several different wallpaper patterns to highlight on the wall.

Chair Rails

Chair rails are another option for creating a custom look in your home. Use white chair rails to create an elegant border for your wallpaper, or have the rails painted to accent the colors from the wall covering. Pull a hue from the wallpaper pattern to create a stunning, cohesive look. Chair rails are ideal for use in a master bedroom or in a dining room for a more formal appearance.

Textured Wallpaper

Create a focal wall with textured wallpaper to create a unique focal point in the room. This type of wallpaper comes in a variety of designs, including brick, wood logs, or even swirling paisley patterns. While you can use this type of wallpaper to cover all of your walls, it can also be used as a trim option. For example, choose a patterned wallpaper and use custom molding trim to create a border midway down the wall. Use the textured wallpaper on the bottom, much like you wood a chair rail trim, to create a 3D effect in your room. Textured wallpaper can also be cut to create custom trim at the top of the walls where you would otherwise install crown molding for a bold, modern look.
